  • In this cell the crowd is depicted gathering in the square for the lottery. Mr. Summer's is the man standing in the front of the square who conducts the lottery. Mr. Summer's attempts to keep the crowd in a jovial mood by being polite and friendly. For instance, when Tessie approaches later then the rest of the townsfolk he greets her with a smile stating "Thought we would have to get on without you Tessie''. However, his lightheartedness is not maintained when he says they must begin.
  • The Stoning of Tessie
  • The Black Box sits on a three legged stool in the middle of the square. Inside it contains various pieces of paper for the drawing of the lottery. The box has been in use for several years, it is even stated that ''There was a story that the present box had been made with some pieces of the box that had preceded it''. No one is sure who will get the selected paper from the box. But one thing is for sure, no one seems to want it.
  • Everyone takes a paper from the box no matter age or condition and waits patiently for the drawing to finish. Once everyone has selected a piece of paper they all slowly unfold them to reveal that it was Tessie who held the chosen paper. The paper in her hand ''had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal-company office''. She had sadly won the lottery.
  • After it was revealed that Tessie had drawn the chosen paper she began to yell and protest. She screamed that the lottery ''Isn't fair''. And desperately pleaded '' as the villagers moved in on her'' with stones they had taken from the pile gathered nearby. Tessie was hit with ''stones on the side of her head'' and all over the rest of her body until eventually the impact of the stones would kill her.
