  • Roderick Usher sends a letter to his boyhood friend Usher asking him to come visit as Usher feels mentally and physically unstable and sick. So, his friend (narrator) comes to visit and sees the creepy looking house of Usher. He notices there is a crack on the front of the house.
  • The narrator observes that Usher is in a bad condition, so he tries to cheer him up, but nothing works. Usher also reveals that his sister Madeline is one of the reasons for his sickness because of the disease she has. Later on, Usher tells the narrator that Madeline died, so they keep her body in a vault in the basement.
  • The narrator later discovers that Madeline and Usher are actually twins. Usher's condition becomes a lot worse after his twin's death. One night during a loud and strange storm, Usher comes to the narrator's room and the narrator reads a book so that Usher can calm down.
  • As the narrator reads the story, the sounds he describes from the story start showing up in real life. Then, they hear a scream and Usher confesses that he has been hearing noises and that he has buried his sister alive! The door of the room opens and there stands Madeline.
  • Madeline throws herself at Usher and both Madeline and Usher die. The narrator runs away from the house.
  • When the narrator is away from the House of Usher, he watches the house fall and collapse. After some time, the house is completely gone.
