- The Birling family are celebrating the engagement of Sheila, their daughter and Gerald Croft. The maid tells them that an inspector has arrived at their house and he explains that a girl names Eva Smith has killed herself by drinking disinfectant - he wants to ask questions.
- I am so sorry :(
- The inspector reveals that Eva used to work at Mr. Birlings factory but he sacked her for going on strike because she wanted a pay rise. Mr. Birling was outraged that such accusations were pointed at him and refuses to take responsibility for her death.
- Disrespectful!
- The inspector then calls Sheila and explains that Sheila got Eva sacked from her next job after she complained that she was making fun of her. Sheila explained that she was angry at her Mum and not Eva. She feels ashamed and responsible for her death.
- The inspector forces Gerald to admit that he had an affair with Daisy Renton (Eva changed her name after getting fired). Gerald met Daisy at a ball and found out she had no where to live, so he let her live in a spare house. Daisy later felt bad that she was living there and just left. Sheila felt hurt and her heart shattered into a million pieces but respected Gerald's honesty but returns the engagement ring.
- Mrs Birling is then exposed that she refused to help pregnant Eva after she came to the charity where Mrs Birling helped women in need. She refused to help her because Eva said her last name was "Birling".
- After Eric (Birlings son) has been drinking a lot, it is revealed that Eric got Eva pregnant whilst he was drunk. Mr and Mrs Birling are outraged and feel like someone has pushed them down a flight of stairs. Eric then explains that he stole money from the factory to give to Eva. Eric feels responsible for her death.
