  • Hey friends! Have you heard that the desert biome is a dry, terrestrial biome? It consists of habitats that receive very little rainfall each year, generally less than 50 centimeters. The desert biome covers about one-fifth of the Earth's surface and includes regions at a variety of latitudes and elevations.
  • Soils are course-textured, shallow, rocky or gravely with good drainage and have no subsurface water. They are coarse because there is less chemical weathering. The finer dust and sand particles are blown elsewhere, leaving heavier pieces behind.
  • According to D’Antonio Meyerson, 2002, Major desert restoration techniques include: planting and seeding, managing water, manipulating soil properties, and providing cover. Controlling non-native species often also is part of restoration and subsequent maintenance management in the restored ecosystem.
  • Deserts have rare canopy, with plants being ground-hugging shrubs and short woody trees. Leaves are nutrient-rich and water-conserving, while cacti have reduced leaves and restricted photosynthetic activity.
  • Some plants open stomata at night for gas exchange. Animals include burrowers, kangaroo rats, insects, reptiles, and birds. Animals stay in protected hideaways during hot days and forage at dusk or night.
