  • Behind us is Mauna Kea, one of the most sacred sites in Hawaii.
  • Mauna Kea is the site of our creation and the beginning of our ancestry.
  • Mauna Kea is home to altars honoring our gods, as well as the site of many of our rituals.
  • At the top of Mauna Kea lives the Akua, the Na Akua, Na'Aumakua, and is the meeting place of Papa and Wakea. It is the home of many of our deities.
  • Mauna Kea is also a sacred burial ground and the embodiment of high ranking chiefs and priests of our ancestors.
  • Despite the importance of Mauna Kea to our culture, it is continually being built on.
  • The University of Hawaii has built 13 observatories on Mauna Kea. Some are as close as 225 feet to our sacred sites.
  • If they continue to build these observatories, we will no longer be able to perform our rituals. This goes against the definition of "undue burden."
  • Mauna Kea must be protected. It is very sacred to us Native Hawaiians and it central to our culture and history.
  • While we understand the importance of science, the observatories are killing our culture. Soon, we will no longer be able to visit our sacred sites and perform our rituals.
