  • Set Up: Act 1
  • Act 2
  • Act 2: Pt. 2
  • Younger Family is introduced to the play. Big Walter Younger has died and the family was left with 10,000 dollars. This insurance check has no particular inheritance, so the family begins to quarrel over it. Walter's dreams of owning a Liquor store are introduced, and Beneatha's dreams to go to medical school as well. Ruth is pregnant, so the family must decide what they will use the money for. This represents the Set Up of the three act structure.
  • Act 3 (Climax)
  • Mama's purchase of a house in an all-white neighborhood angers Walter. Because she wouldn't give him the money he gets even angrier, representing the ascending action represented in the three-act structure.
  • Mama's house purchase left her with $6500, which she chooses to give to Walter. She instructs him to use it for her schooling, but he does not. Lindner offers them money to stay out of neighborhood, but they do not take it.
  • Walter did not put the money aside for Beneatha's schooling, and was stolen by Willy Harris. Walter realizes that Lindner's offer would strip him of his pride, and so he does not take it with the understanding that he is better than just money, and so is one's own pride.
