- The rain poured down over our camp. Thunder roared and lightning crackled. The fires that lit up the camp stayed lit somehow. Our excise that day had been brutal. No one was feeling very excited. All of a sudden, drums sounded in sync with the thunder. Our favorite songs played over the heavy rain. Bands were often used to cheer us up after harsh days.
- An African American man named Marshall was assigned to join our troop recently. While marching in the forest, we heard rustling around us in the bushes. All of a sudden, a troop of Confederates attacked. We had been targeted, since Marshall, a black man, was there, and they were trying to kill him.
- Return fire!
- Oh no...
- Attack, men!
- I had been injured during the surprise attack. My arm was broken and bleeding. Nurses and doctors were understaffed and one man had his leg amputated without any medicine. They strapped him down to a table.
- After what I've been given, I'm still hungry! Beans, bacon, pickled beef, dried and compressed vegetables is our diet. For some of us, it's enough. But for me, it isn't.
- I'm still hungry!
- There are flying bullets and exploding shells everywhere! Some scared men are now just realizing what it means to be a soldier. This battle was short and bloody. Only a few battles. But most battles are like that. The battlefield was covered in thick gray clouds of smoke from our rifles. I'm glad that I didn't get hurt this time.
- NO MERCY!
- FIRE!!
- I was captured during that last battle with a few other men from my troop. There's even less food here in Andersonville than there was back at camp. The confederate men here are cruel. I've been trading rats, bread, and tobacco with other Union soldiers in my spare time, which I have too much of. I hope I get out of here alive.
