- I hope I don't get caught.. I would get sent to a prison camp.
- Some prison camps were worse than others. The living spaces where filled with others it was very crammed. There were large disease outbreaks. Bad treatment from guards and commanders. Some camps only had one meal which was dinner that consisted of a bean soup and tiny piece of meat. Thousands of people died in these camps.
- They still don't know I'm a woman! I'm glad we get food I thought I wouldn't have any food.
- Union soldiers were fed beef and pork, which was usually salted or boiled, coffee, died fruits and vegetables (that were in season), stews to stretch out the meat and vegetables. Bread, corn, corn bread, beans, rice, sugar.
- There was discrimination against African Americans during the war. 10% of the army force was African Americans. They were given jobs like cooks, laborers, teamsters. They were given other lesser jobs like digging trenches. If they needed medical help there were different hospitals for them and white people and sometimes they didn't get correct medical help.. They were paid 10$ a month with a 3$ take off for clothing while white soldiers were paid 13$ a month and there wasn't any money taken off for clothing.

- In the winters soldiers would build wood cabins and that would be there winter base and in warmer weather they would pitch canvas tents only a few miles from the battle site. They were given food to eat.
- During the Civil War there were battles that happened. First the Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Vicksburg Campaign.

- Most surgeries were done without t anesthesia, and there were lots of amputations. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars. People died from battle injuries, diseases, and a poor diet. There wasn't a realization on how important clean surgeries were so most surgery sights became infected.
