  • James and Lisa have just had a serious car accident in a parking lot. An ambulance has just arrived and is assessing the patients. Both of the patients are in critical condition and will die soon if they don’t receive treatment from a hospital. Lisa is also pregnant and if she is not given treatment her and the baby will probably die. The ambulance has the choice of waiting for another ambulance to come in the hope that neither patients die or only take one and leave the other patient at the scene.
  • What should we do? If we take one the other will just be left to die? And, if we didn't take Lisa we would killing her and her baby! We also would be not being true to our job because we are supposed to save lives not leave them to die.
  • Yes, but if we left them they would both die, at least we are saving one life and if we take Lisa we would be saving her and her baby's life. So we are doing our job by saving at least one life but who would we take?
  • What if we just stayed here with them instead? Then instead of abandoning them we could use the equipment in the van to secure them for now until another ambulance arrives. This means that we have a higher chance of saving both their lives and also doing our duty.
  • But what happens if we don't have the right equipment and they both end up dying. We have a better chance of at least taking one even if we abandon the other. And what happens if there is no other trucks around and we are stuck out here for hours waiting?
  • Well, we need to decide asap and I think the best option for both patients is to stay.
  • Yes, I agree.
  • I think choosing to stay was a much better option, considering that we have a plenty of equipment in the ambulance that should keep the patients stable for a short amount of time before the other ambulance arrives.
  • Yes, and we also are doing the right thing by not abandoning a patient and by following our duty of call.
  • So, the officers made the decision to stay with the at risk patients instead of taking one and leaving the other. As a results of this both patients survived thanks to the officers.
