- Jerome is 12 years old and lives in Chicago with his Mom, Dad, Grandma, and his sister, Kim. They don't have a lot of money, so they don't live in the greatest neighborhood. Jerome considers himself poor, but not as poor as some of the other kids at his school.
- "Stop bullying me and Carlos, Eddy."
- "I don't think so, chumps."
- "Ha ha ha ha!"
- Jerome and Kim walk to school together every morning. It's one of their morning routine. At the end of the day, Kim would meet Jerome at the front of his school.
- "Go away!"
- Jerome meets Carlos, the new kid at his school, who has just moved from San Antonio, Texas. He seemed very shy. He was pretty skinny and wore dirty clothing.
- "Thanks, I've always wanted drums."
- "Wow, you're so good at the drums."
- Jerome and Carlos eat lunch in the bathroom so they don't get bullied by Eddy. This is the first day Carlos has eaten here, but Jerome has been doing this for a while. Jerome is worried that Carlos will be bullied.

- Eddy is bullying Jerome and Carlos because they have less than Eddy, and they aren't as popular. Mike and Snap hang out with Eddy and bully people with him.

- Carlos flees so he can get a toy weapon to scare off Eddy and his friends. It works and Eddy and his friends didn't bother them for the rest of the day.

- Jerome was hurt very badly and passed away. Carlos started to take Kim to school and back. Carlos picked up sticks and used them like drumsticks to cheer Kim up.
- One day, Kim invited Carlos to her house for supper. It was a way of saying thank you to Carlos for helping her go to school and back. After that, Carlos went home and felt really bad because he gave Jerome a toy weapon and that got him in trouble.
