- When the holidays started in September, I went to my father's house to be with him during the holiday.

- I walked up and down the corner beyond my parents' old bedroom. I stopped, stared at the large fenced-in area under the blue gum tree. It was where my father kept the red-crested night heron, one of the last of his species.
- The year park officials brought the bird to the Modder River was a difficult one. My father was about to resign as director of the small sanctuary when park officials phoned about the bird. They wanted the heron to stay in the Modder River for the slightest chance they could find a mate. My father stayed on at Modder River, and arrangements were made for me to go to boarding school.
