  • Exposition
  • Once I conceived of a plan to murder the old man, the plan haunted me day and night
  • Rising Action One
  • Oh how I am watching this man with great dissimulation. His eye is yet not open so I have to wait yet wait another night.
  • Rising Action Two
  • The antagonist in the story is the narrator. His main goal throughout the entire story is to prove his sanity by describing how carefully he planned and carried out the murder of the old man. He begins by telling the listener that the motive for murder is nothing more than the sight of the old man's "vulture eye".
  • Climax
  • I am sorry to have done this but if I hadn't, then the neighbors would've heard your heartbeat. Why is it that your heart is still beating, but with a muffled sound?
  • Ahh, yes. That shriek was mine from a dream. Nothing to worry about here, would you care to chat?
  • The antagonist of this story is planning out his plan carefully and he is very profound about letting the old man know about his devious acts. He watches the old man every night at 12am to see if his "vulture's eye" is open. He is using the old man's eye as a reason to convince the readers that he isn't crazy for killing the old man because he has a reason. In the morning, he asks the old man how his sleep was just so he could find out whether or not the old man heard him or not. The narrator feels as if he has sagacity and is confident about his plan.
  • Falling Action
  • Sorry to come at such a late night, but the neighbors reported a shriek coming from this house.
  • The narrator has the audacity to start laughing because of his confidence about his plan on the eighth night of watching the old man. He accidently wakes up the old man which causes the old man to stand up in his bed. The narrator hides in the doorway and the old man is sitting up in bed, this goes on for about an hour. The narrator hears the "heartbeat of the old man" which represents his anxiety rising. The "heartbeat", or his anxiety, is increasing because he is afraid the neighbors are going to hear which is the last straw for his patience and causes him to kill the old man.
  • Resolution
  • It was me that committed the crime, don't mock me no more. "Villain's, dissemble no more, I admit the deed!"
  • The narrator finally gives in and goes into the room and kills the old man. The narrator killed the old man by suffocating him with the mattress. With one muffled shriek, the old man passed away from not being able to breathe.
  • The narrator carries out his plan and kills the old man. The old man shrieked which alarmed the neighbors which caused them to call the police. While the police are on their way, the narrator is chopping up the old man's body in the bathtub so there is no blood on the floor. The narrator hides the body under a crevice in the floorboard. The police finally arrive and the narrators sits with them right on the floor in which the body is under. He starts to hear the "old man's heartbeat" and feels as if the police are mocking him so he confesses.
  • The narrator ends up confessing to his crime out of guilt. He felt as if the police were mocking him and as if the old man's heartbeat was getting louder.
