CLOTHING DRIVE POSTERS FOR THE SCHOOL
It was a beautiful Monday morning in Chateaugay, Montréal, in Ms.Hall's fifth grade class at L'école Anglaise Des Enfants.
Ms.Hall asked all the students to put their thinking caps on and think about what a "perfect world" means to them. The class was buzzing with voices and the space was soon filled with ideas flying across the room.
The class made their way to the easel and identified food, water and shelter as basic needs. Ms.Hall asked the class to think about why shelter was a basic need.
Ms.Hall asked if all homes were the same and why they are different. She asked the class to give examples of different kinds of homes.
"How would you feel if you didn't have a home?" Ms.Hall asked. "What are some things you enjoy because you have a home?" Everyone shared their ideas and Ms.Hall wrote them down on the board.
Ms.Hall asked the class if they ever saw someone who lived on the streets and did not have a home? The class replied in unison -- "Yes!"
The class discussed a few reasons why someone might experience homelessness.
Ms.Hall gave all the students numbers from one to nine, and told everyone to form circles in groups of six. She instructed that everyone passes the numbers in a circle as the music plays, and for bearers of the numbers to be called, to sit down, leaving the circle; once the music stops.
As the game progressed, more and more people started sitting down, and seemed sad. Those still seated on the chairs in cirlces, started looking worried.
The class discussed how they felt when they had to sit out and they all agreed that it was a sad experience. "Likewise, the individuals experiencing homelessness often are faced with various hardships making them sad." Ms.Hall remarked. The class decided to help those experiencing homelessness by having a clothing drive and making posters for the school.
