  • Today it's all about animal feed and nutrients.
  • I love coming out to the farm!
  • A nutrient is a chemical element or compound that aids in the support of life.
  • Don't animals just need grass?
  • Some can eat grass, but will do even better when given supplements in addition to grass. Supplements provide phosphate, calcium and trace minerals. They are especially important during dry or rainy seasons.
  • Who remembers the five main groups of nutrients?
  • There was.... energy nutrients, proteins, minerals and um..... I don't remember the other two.
  • Another one was vitamins because you need them to regulate a lot of the body's functions.
  • And water was the last one. We need it to carry nutrients around in our bodies and keep our temperature right.
  • If an animal does not get enough of any of the nutrients it needs it can develop a deficiency.
  • The animal often never reaches it's full growth and it might have health and digestive problems.
  • What happens then?
  • Anyone remember what energy nutrients and protein help with?
  • You got it! And with livestock it builds strong hooves and horns and makes the animal's hair and skin healthy.
  • Energy nutrients are like energy drinks! They give us lots of energy to run around and work up a sweat!
  • Protein helps build our bodies, like our muscles.
  • Minerals are necessary for bones, teeth and tissue. They regulate chemical activity.
  • The most important thing about all these nutrients is to keep them in balance so the animal does not get too much but also does not have a deficiency!
