  • As our technology advances, new cures and treatments are made available for us to use!
  • Thanks for telling me now...
  • However, some advancements can bring up new questions that medical ethicists, or Bioethicists, ask the scientists who discover these treatments to think about. Bioethicists like to discuss the medical field’s moral values and find ways to make sure other people stick to them.
  • What happens if...?
  • Well, we can tell others to...
  • Relax, it won't hurt a bit!
  • For example, the Bioethicists may say that doctors shouldn’t use their patients to practice giving someone stitches when they don’t need them. This rule makes sure that doctors don’t hurt their patients on purpose and to be more responsible at work.
  • This is NOT good!
  • This idea can be used when thinking about how we can use new ways to fix a person’s genes, too!
  • Please help me...
  • Gene therapies can be used to cure many diseases that come from broken or missing parts in a person’s DNA. It’s not easy to find these new treatments, so when one is made, a lot of doctors want to experiment with it
  • I gotta remind Jimmy not to use the red formula.
  • Because of that, with every good new discovery comes a lot of opportunities to use it for bad. One day, evil scientists may be able to make scary monsters in their labs instead of helping people like you and me!
  • This is where the Bioethicists come in. They’d be able to make sure the evil scientists don’t have the chance to make scary monsters by agreeing on a rule that bans the genetic experiments used to make them! What do they consider when making these decisions, though?
  • Typically, Bioethicists like to consider a new discovery’s effect on moral values of many different groups, how responsible doctors have to be with their actions when using it, how easy or hard it is to make and use multiple times, what people in the future have to do to make sure everyone is being responsible, and any possible side effects the discovery might cause.
  • It is very important to think about how a medicine can help others and affect their values. For example, some people may think that changing genes in any way is morally wrong. Scientists would have to prepare for any negative responses to their work.
  • Scientists have to be super responsible when handling new experiments and making new medicines. However, they are people like you and me: they sometimes make mistakes. Sometimes their mistakes can hurt a lot of people.
  • What do I do with this again?
  • This is why they have to be extra careful and make sure they are handling everything responsibly or else more monsters will be let loose!
  • These problems don’t go away with time, so Bioethicists set and adjust guidelines when new advancements are made by future scientists, especially if monsters are involved...
  • 10 YEARS LATER...
  • If a medicine has any bad side effects, Bioethicists will write reports that talk about them and what they do to people who take the medicine.
  • It's SUPER important for doctors and scientists to be updated. They also have an obligation to inform new doctors and scientists, too!
  • I'll pass it along, thanks!
  • As time goes on, there will be changes made to some medicines and treatments that make them better than they were before! Doctors and scientists have to teach each other about those changes in order to help people the best way possible.
  • In this case, the new ideas passed along would allow Jimmy to make the good medicine and fix the monsters genes! He should feel a lot better after he becomes a lion again.
  • No one really knows what the future holds for genetics, but one thing's for sure: we have to be responsible and NOT make scary monsters!
  • Get back here!
  • Also, if you see any more of them flying around, make sure you call Jimmy. He's been searching for days!
