- The Birling family (and Gerald) are celebrating the engagement of Sheila and Gerald.
- I would like to make a toast to my daughter Sheila and Gerald, I am so glad to now have you as my son. Congratulations!
- Their party is interrupted by an inspector called Inspector Goole. He has some news that a girl called Eva Smith has taken her own life by drinking disinfectant and died that night in the infirmary. He wants to ask the Birling family a few questions, and Eva worked for Mr Birling.
- I am Inspector Goole, I am here to ask a few questions about a girl named Eva Smith, who has sadly died tonight.
- Oh thats awful!
- Inspector Goole asks Mr Birling if he knows Eva Smith, and he shows him a photograph of her. Mr Birling remembers her and mentioned the fact that he was going to promote her, but they went on holiday.
- Mr Birling, I believe that this girl worked for you and you fired her.

- Yes?
- Sheila walks in the room and asks what's happening. The inspector explains that a girl drunk a lot of disinfectant and was sent to the infirmary where she later on died. Sheila asks if she was young and pretty.
- The inspector explains that she became very desperate after being sacked, as her parents had died and didn't have a lot of money. He explains that she managed to find a job in a shop, but then got fired after a couple of months. Sheila says she's been to that shop recently.
- Sheila, did you complain at the shops and get her sacked?
- Sheila asked when this happened and asked what she looked like. The inspector showed Sheila a photo of her and she realises she was the one who complained about her and got her fired, Sheila runs out of the room upset.
- Oh no! The poor girl, if only i knew what wouldve happened after! Lord forgive me
