  • Hey Kuya Jericho! Can you help me with my Math lesson? Its about our next topic inverse variations. We are done with direct variations. I want to know how they differ.
  • Yeah sure! Oh that will be fun to study! Let's go there.
  • In direct variations, if two variables are so related such that as one variable increases, the other variable also increases. For example the number of hours you work and the amount of your pay.
  • For example, when you travel to a particular location, as your speed increases, the time it takes to arrive at that location decreases. When you decrease your speed, the time it takes to arrive at that location increases.
  • Very good Bro! Now Inverse variations is the opposite of Direct variations. In inverse variations, if two variables are so related such that as one variable increases, the other variable decreases.
  • Let us take for example, If N varies inversely as M, and N = 5 when M = 3,find N when M = 10.(1) Remember to write the right equation and that inverse variations are solved using the equation, N = k (1/M)(2) You use the information given in the problem to find the value of k.In this case, you need to find k when N = 5 and N = 3.
  • Just like in Direct variations, I will rewrite the equation from step 1 substituting in the value of k found in step 2.5= k (1/3)k= 5 (3)k = 15
  • Then I will use the equation found in step 2 and the remaining information given in the problem to answer the question asked. In this case, I need to find N when M = 10.
  • N = 15 (1/10)N = 15/10 N = 3/2
  • That's correct!
  • I get it now! Thank you so much Kuya!
  • You're welcome.
