  • The first NWMP force left Dufferin, Manitoba, on July 8, 1874, for Blackfoot country. The great "March West" was a painful journey that took more than two months to complete.
  • The first major challenge for the NWMP when they arrived in the territory was to establish relationships with the indigenous peoples. The NWMP volunteered to assist the Blackfoot in dealing with the whiskey traders. Rev. John Mcdougall, a Christian minister, was dispatched to the region to reassure the natives that the police had arrived as friends.
  • Tribal war was to be suppressed, and whiskey trading, horse stealing and all crimes were to be done away with
  • "I exalted British justice and made much of the equality of men in the eyes of the law."
  • The Blackfoot, while being weakened by drink and sickness, were still a strong fighting force. Crowfoot, the Blackfoot chief, concluded that an ally, not a conflict, was what he needed. The hand of friendship was extended to him, and he embraced it.
  • "My brother, your words make me glad ... We want peace"
  • The NWMP immediately established law and order in the neighbourhood. After a conflict with the Blackfoot Indians a year before, many of the traders had already fled to the United States. The rest of the traders were chased back across the border by the NWMP.
  • On Canada's border, the NWMP were showing their value. The NWMP enforced prohibition for the following few years. They built a network of forts throughout the prairies, urging the indigenous peoples to sign treaties with the Canadian government.
