  • Salva was in school when he and his class had heard gunfire outside. Then, his teacher told his class to run to the bushes and not to go home. There was gunfire because of the war in Sudan. Then, he started walking and other people were walking too. He ends up in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. The whole time he was worried about his family and if they were safe and alive. Later, he sees his uncle with the group he was walking with and right now, he was the only family he had. Later, his uncle gets killed by some men from the Nuer tribe.

  • Nya is a fictional character that represents the girls and women in South Sudan today. She is from the Nuer tribe. She has to take two long trips to a pond to get water for her family. The two trips take up the whole day, so she doesn't have time to do other things, like going to school. While going to the pond, there are many dangers like thorns.

  • Six years later, the Ethiopian refugee camp was closing. So Salva was chosen to lead 1500 boys to another refugee camp in Kenya. The journey took a year and half to get to Kenya. More than 1,200 boys arrived safely. After 5 years of living in 2 refugee camps in Kenya, Salva was now 22 years old. And, he was chosen to go live in America. He was one out of 3,000 boys to be chosen. In America, Salva was adopted by a family and he went to school and learned many more things. The 3,000 boys were called "The Lost Boys".

  • My name is Salva.
  • After living in Rochester for more than 6 years, Salva receives an email from his cousin saying that Salva's father is alive and had gotten stomach surgery. Salva was veery surprised at this because he thought that his family had died a long time ago. After some emails back and forth, Salva decides to go back to Sudan to see his father after not seeing him for almost 19 years. When he met his father in the hospital, he finds out that his family is alive and well, except that 2 of his brothers had died. He also finds out that his father gets stomach surgery because of the dirty water he was drinking. On his way back to Rochester, Salva come up with an idea to help the people in South Sudan. He decides to start a project to get clean water for the people by building wells.
  • Through the years, Salva was speaking at churches and schools talking to hundreds of people, raising money for his project for South Sudan. Whenever he would lose hope, he would take a deep breath and think about what his uncle would say, "One step at a time". Day by day, Salva was one step closer to reaching his goal.
  • Hello, my name is Nya.
  • Nya finds out that her people were building a school for the children, and Nya was very excited because she was going learn to read and write. Also, a well was built in Nya's village, so Nya wouldn't have to make the two long trips to the pond anymore. Later she realizes that the person who built the well was from the Dinka tribe. She was curious why a Dinka would help the Nuer tribe(since they were rival tribes). Then she finally meets the person who built the well. The person who built the well was Salva.
