Brian chapter 9 to 14

- Brian discovered that his hatchet and a surface in the cave could make sparks. He experimented with things such as, grass twigs, and etc. He made a nest with birch tree bark and then struck the wall with the hatchet making a fire. He had to feed it dead limbs, but now he had created something alive, a guard and a friend. His only regret was he didn't have someone to share the moment with.
- Brian discovered that he could make a signal fire. Then he snuggled in to sleep. In the middle of the night he woke to find the fire dying. He fortunately revived the fire. Suddenly he heard a sound but he couldn't see it, so he just went back to sleep. Next morning, he found 17 turtle eggs safely tucked under sand. Hunger struck and he couldn't resist and ate 6 eggs raw and decided to save the rest.
- Brian stores the eggs, cleans the camp and stacks the wood to keep him from depression. He sees his own reflection in the lake and notices that he has changed. He lost weight and his skin darkened.
- Brian tried the fish spear, but he had been too slow. He tried throwing, lunging and sneaking, but none of them worked. He decided to make a bow and arrow. After just devoured an egg and a few berries and discovered that he was full. As he was looking for wood for his bow and arrow, something like a chicken bumped into him and suddenly he started hearing a motor of a plane! He instantly made a signal fire but the plane didn't notice. He was alone, lost and hopeless.
- Brian tries to commit suicide feeling hopeless, but he doesn't let himself. As Brian's life is threatened by a mama bear, its cubs, and a pack of wolves passing by, Brian reflects on the time that's passed by since the plane crash. After exploring different angles and tricks he had done food. He missed a plane, but he had found a new way to survive. Now he had a new kind of hope within him. Hope in the fact that he could learn, survive, and take care of himself. Tough hope.
- Brian thinks about mistakes. Mistakes he made, mistakes he's learned from, and mistakes to prevent. He gets sprayed in the face by trying to stop the skunk that was trying to steal Brian's turtle eggs. He was blind for 2 hours and his eyes were aching badly. Brian has learned that he needs a safer shelter that can protect his food and himself from animals and natural disasters.
