  • Robert Brown
  • Meet the people who helped create the cell theory!
  • Robert Hooke
  • Matthias Schleiden
  • Theodor Schwann
  • Rudolf Virchow
  • Robert Brown
  • Hey! What is this lighter circle thing I have been seeing in each one of these cells?!
  • Brown discovered the nucleus in the cell, which helped him to come to the conclusion that all living things are made of cells. He did this by observing many plants cells and saw that each cell had a nucleus in them.
  • Robert Hooke
  • The cork looks like... CELLS!
  • Robert Hooke was looking at a cork under the microscope when he noticed that the cells looked like box shaped structures as you see in CELLS or rooms. He then thought of the name CELLS because of this!
  • Matthias Schleiden - Matthias founded the first part of the cell theory "Cells are the basic unit of plant structure." He noticed this as he was observing different plants and how they were built/structured.
  • I see now! Cells are the basic unit of plant structure!
  • Theodor Schwann - Theodor also founded the second part of the cell theory "Cells are the basic unit of animal structure" which then led him and Matthias to conclude that "The cell is the basic unit of structure of all organisms."
  • Aha! This animal's structure is made of cells! Which has to mean... cells are the basic unit of animal structure just like plants!
  • Rudolf Virchow- Rudolf had the theory that since animals are unable to arise without previously existing animals then, cells are unable to arise without previously existing cells also. This means that a whole organism does not get sick—only certain cells or groups of cells. He discovered this by looking at different diseases/disorders under a microscope and noticing that the whole organism is not infected but instead only certain cells or groups of cells.
  • Now a whole organism cannot get sick but instead only certain cells or groups of cells will get sick.
