  • Hey, there! Glad you can join us. Today's lesson is going to be about selecting physical activities. Let's get started!
  • Now, of course we should engage in some sort of physical activity like a recreational program in order to be healthy, but it should be something that you enjoy and also appropriate for your health and fitness level.
  • Don't force yourself to do something you don't like and/or aren't capable of doing just because you want to become fit. That actually will potentially make it worse for yourself. Find something that you like, but is also safe and affordable.
  • Some questions to consider when selecting a recreational activity are: 1. Which components of physical fitness do you need/want to improve? 2. What types of activities do you enjoy? 3. What types of activities help you manage your stress? 4. What sports skills do you have? 5. Would you like to participate with others in these activities or on your own? 6. Where are your chosen activities offered? 7. Will you need special equipment or facilities to participate in your chosen activity? Of course, there's not a single activity that will satisfy everyone's needs. For example, I like basketball, and I like exerting my stress on something, and so this is perfect for me, but it may not for someone who doesn't like sports.
  • Hot weather definitely has some big concerns. Normally, you'll most likely suffer from muscle cramps, but there are some serious conditions that you need to watch out for when exercising in hot weather.First one is heat cramps. If you have any of the following symptoms: rapid heart rate, clammy skin with chills, inability to quench thirst, and/or nausea, drink more water and get in a cool environment as well as extract layers of clothing if necessary.Another condition is heat exhaustion. If you are feeling dizzy/lightheaded, sweating uncontrollably, having difficulty breathing, feeling exhausted, rapid pulse rate, and/or headaches, slowly drink water and move to a cooler environment along with removing any clothes that are damp. Cool down with ice or a cold shower. The last one is a heat stroke. This is the most dangerous one. If experiencing warm skin (dry touch), irritability, unable to maintain balance, swollen tongue, vision/hearing issues, and/or lack of perspiration and urine, immediately call 911 and seek medical assistance. Cool down with an ice back to the front and back of head. Remove clothing and sit in a cold shower or apply rubbing alcohol to the body.
  • Instructor Williams is going to teach you about selecting physical activities today!
  • Another thing to note when participating in an activity/sport/workout is the weather. Please note to wear appropriate clothing depending on the weather and some sturdy shoes with it. Hot and cold weather both have their concerns that I will be addressing.
  • Find the right activity that is perfect for you! Don't push yourself to do something you don't want to because you won't be helping youself.
  • Conditions like hypothermia (low body temperature) and frostbite (freezing of limbs) are the most common. Move to an indoor area and seek medical attention immediately if you think you have either of these conditions. When exercising in cold weather, it's important to wear water/wind resistant clothes in layers to prevent wet clothing but to also be able to add/remove layers if necessary.
  • Now, hot weather conditions are not the only kind you should be concerned about. Cold weather can also have its own concerns.
  • Before picking an activity, consider these 7 questions and go from there!
  • That's it for today's lesson! I hope you learned about how to pick your physical activity and what things you should keep in mind when exercising. Now, go enjoy your activity, and I'll see you next time!
  • Please read the following conditions that could happen while exercising in hot weather.
  • Cold weather can also have some serious concerns to your health and safety. Read as to what you should do when exercising in cold weather.
