  • We need more freedom! We need more rights!
  • We are not being treated fairly! The conditions that we are put under are inhumane! We demand change now!

  • 18th Century Saint Domingue (present day): The slaves expressed how the difference in treatment between the social classes resulted in a large lack of freedom. Due to the harsh mistreatment, the slaves developed a negative feeling towards the slave establishment and it's owners.
  • The slaves began to really demonstrate how they felt about their treatment. They confronted their slave owners in hope for change, and began holding revolts on the plantation. Support was gained from the other Haitian slaves towards the revolt, leading to an enormous uprising.
  • We hereby declare Haiti as an independent country, with liberty, freedom, and justice for all!
  • In response to the uprising, the French established a decree in September 1791. The decree stated that all slaves that participated in the revolts would be granted a pardon. This made the slaves even more upset because it was not what they asked for, so they started to take serious action.
  • Hooray, we're finally free!
  • In 1793, General Toussaint L'Ouverture aided the slaves in their revolt. He led many successful revolts that resulted in Haiti's independence from European powers. He also helped create the first black republic, and was seen as a hero throughout Haiti.
  • After a successful revolution, French leader Jean-Jacques proclaimed the independence of Saint Domingue with the Haitian Declaration of Independence in 1804.
  • The success of the Haitian revolution led to black people being released from enslavement and the harsh treatment they endured. Saint Domingue became the first Latin American country to win independence due to the slave uprisings. It also became the first black led country in the Western Hemisphere.
