- A girl named India Opal was running errands for her father when suddenly she sees a dog running around the store Winn-Dixie. She also sees the employees running around and shouting, attempting to catch the dog.

- Opal and Winn-Dixie enter a library. Mrs. Franny Block, the librarian, greets them and she tells many stories to Opal and her dog. Opal and Mrs. Franny Block become friends.

- When Opal notices Winn-Dixie run away into a strange place, she finds Winn-Dixie in someone's home. She finds an old woman who lives there named Gloria Dump. She and Gloria become friends as well.

- Opal set out with her father to look for Winn-Dixie after a storm had rolled in. Winn-Dixie has a pathological fear of thunderstorms, so he was frightened.

- Opal and Gloria Dump host a party at Gloria's house and invite friends, including Mrs. Franny, the Dewberry brothers Stevie and Dunlap, and Otis, a man who works at a pet shop.
