  • How comes it then that this her cold so great is not dissolved through my so hot desire,
  • Or how comes it that my exceeding heat is not allayed by her heart-frozen cold,
  • Idiom is a poetic device used throughout the poem. The device makes the poem more emotional and poetic. It makes the meaning more relatable and interesting as a reader. Without the device this poem would lose quality.
  • The turn is line 9. The poem went from a man giving his love to a woman who did not want it, to a united love for each other. The poem starts off with the man describing his affection as fire and her responsive heart as ice. You'd think his flame like affection would melt her cold heart but her heart just got even colder the more he tried. Eventually, his love for her wasn't affected by the fire and ice dynamic. He in fact changed the world with his powerful love and she then falls in love with him.

  • Such is the power of love in gentle mind, that it can alter all the course of kind.
