  • Japan, Italy, and Germany were the three main participants in what was known as the Axis alliance. The nations signed the Tropartite pack in September 1940. German dictator Adolph Hitler, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, and Japanese Emperor Hirohito were in charge of these nations. The nations felt they were isolated enough so they banded together hopeing to deter the United states from entering WW2, and as allies. The axis powers decided to act on their policy of expansion by invading Russia, who was a former ally to Germany just a few years prior. Operation Barbarossa was the largest land invation in modern history, comprising of over 10 million soilders.
  • Following it, five additional countries joined the Tripartite Pact. They were Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania. All six of Germany's European Axis allies took part in the Holocaust through either killing Jews themselves or by sending them to Germany for execution.
  • Tropartite pack
  • The Soviet Union, the United States, and Great Britain led the Allied Powers. The leaders of these nations were Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. On January 1, 1942, they joined forces by signing the United Nations Declaration. On that day, the Declaration was also signed by fifteen other nations. The declaration was signed by allied states opposing the axis powers in WW2, the participants agreed to not compose seperate peace treaties with the axis powers, and declared war against them. 8 axis nations also signed the declaration later and by March 1945, 21 more states had signed the Declaration and declared war on Germany.
  • All in all, the interwar period proved a trying time for the countries in power. everyone was focused on following their own initiatives and keeping up appearances, when really they were all untrustworthy of each other and making secret pacts and alliances on the side. The most heinous of all would have to be Nazi-Germany led by Hitler, who time and time again violated all their pacts, agreements and policys with other nations. Military alliances can definitley be seen as a cause of WW2
