  • Setting/Rising action
  • Climax
  • Falling action/Resolution
  • Bradbury begins with the story telling us to wake up, "Tick-tock seven o'clock, time to get up..." The stories action begins to rise as were taken through the houses daily functions. We can infer there was a family that lived there due to some of the tasks we hear.
  • Metaphor/Personification
  • The tree falls and the house goes up into flames, "A falling tree bough crashed through the kitchen window...The room was ablaze in an instant!"
  • Tone/Mood
  • The house dies and left is in rubble, "Smoke and silence. A great quantity of smoke...Among the ruins, one wall stood alone. The resolution of this story ends with the last single wall, standing in the middle of the rubble, ending the way it began, "'Today is August 5, 2026, today is..."
  • Theme
  • “hot water whirled them down a metal throat which digested and flushed them away”- Bradbury uses a metaphor to compare the metal pipe of a sink drain to a throat. Bradbury uses lots of examples of personification to pull us deeper into his stories. For example, "The house shuddered..." Bradbury personifies the house multiple times in this story.
  • The mood of the story in my opinion is a sad or somber. I think this because at one point of the story were given a description of one side of the house. "Here the silhouette in paint of a man mowing a lawn...a woman bent to pick up flowers...a small boy...opposite him a girl..."
  • The theme of the story is about technology vs. man. Specifically technology continues to advance then it will grow to be danger.
