- Odysseus ruled the Island of Ithaca alongside his wife, Penelope, and his newborn son, Telemachus. This where Odysseus was before the story began. Odysseus is blind to what adventure awaits him, connecting it to the ordinary world.
- Meeting the Mentor
- Odysseus is asked to battle in the Trojan war, which is said to begin his elongated adventure. This disrupts Odysseus's "ordinary world", as it poses a challenge that must be met.
- Crossing the First Threshold
- When an oracle warns Odysseus that he will be gone for a long time, he wants to avoid taking part in the Trojan War. So Odysseus pretended to go insane because he didn't want to abandon his home, but King Menelaus of Sparta put Odysseus's son, Telemachus, to the plow. - Return
- Since his work isn't over, Odysseus returns disguised as a beggar. Penelope, his wife, is besieged by suitors who want to marry her, and Odysseus must get rid of them. This begins the "road back" section of the plot, as Odysseus needs one more push to return to his normal life.
- Odysseus is compelled to make a plan that would get rid of them and make sure his wife remained loyal. He puts his life at stake but manages to emerge victorious, by killing the thousands of suitors that betrayed him.
