- Act 4
- It is the middle of the night. Everyone is in bed. There is quiet for a second or two, broken only by the sound of airplanes, and running feet on the street below. Suddenly, out of the silence and the dark, we hear Anne scream. Mrs. Frank grabs a shawl and pulls it around her. She rushes into Anne, taking her in her arms. Mr. Frank hurriedly gets up, putting on his overcoat. Margot sits up, terrified. Gradually Anne comes out of her nightmare, still trembling with horror.
- Act 5
- Praised be Thou...
- Anne wakes up the house with her screams during a nightmare. She has been keeping Mr. Dussel up for weeks. Mr. Dussel complains about her because he’s worried people outside will be able to hear her. Mrs. Frank offers to sit with Anne until she falls asleep. Anne rejects her mother’s offers of comfort and asks instead for her father. Her mom was very hurt.
- Act 5
- Anne’s father then comforts her (Anne). She confesses to her father how she is afraid the police will come to drag her away as they did to Jopie.
- Dad, I'm terrified!
- It is the first night of the Hanukkah celebration. Mr. Frank is standing at the head of the table on which is the Menorah. He lights the Shamos, or servant candle, and holds it as he says the blessing. Seated listening is all of the “family”, dressed in their best. The men wear hats, Peter wears his cap.
- Mrs. Frank had that worried face because her daughter dreamed that the green police were coming for them and that they broke the door and grabbed her, but at the same time sad because her daughter does not live her because she says that her mother never understands her and rejected her when she was going to kiss him.
