  • Who decided that success could only be earned through hard work. Success is only possible with a better job.
  • You said it. Where are those "better jobs" that made them successful. I don't see a single one available to me.

  • In this conversation, the fulfilling world of success is only achievable through an unfair system as you won't be able to afford it until you become much older. The teen does not find a world in which he cannot be successful until he is too old to adventure fair. Causing an effect Robert Merton calls the strain theory in which society keeps you from achieving success through rules and unknown regulations.
  • Increase in Intensity
  • It's becoming much clearer that the work we do will not achieve the results that the older gen has in positions of power.
  • The teen is beginning to relate his strain from society to be connected to the older generation that came before him. By comparing the "problems" of society to the older generation's decision making power, he is becoming ageist and believing that they are stopping him from living his dream life.
  • From Diversion to Deviance
  • OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW!!! LET US MAKE OUR OWN PATHS!!!!
  • By combining their ageist beliefs the teens are finding motivation to combat what they think to be an enemy. By finding likeminded people they are encouraging their conflicting belief with society and creating what will soon be a social diversion or a fad that warrants an unapproving response from the older generations.
  • Retaliation or Compromise?
  • What do those kids know. They haven't REALLY worked a day in their life. I'm not going to give up my great job just because some greenhorn thinks it's not fair.
  • By centering others on a common belief, the two social deviants can strengthen efforts towards their common goal. This is done by creating a subculture in which they are in a battle against "exclusive" seniority who are creating a glass ceiling, in this case for the younger generations, where they make it difficult to raise to higher management positions by filling them up and holding them for many decades.
  • We believe that they preach success because they hold the best jobs for a long time, only allowing the next eldest to take their place. This is unfair and exclusive behavior that must stop. We deserve a chance to make a change in the world we live in!!
  • They tell us that success only comes from hard work, but we work to the bone with no success in sight.
  • With the development of subcultural identify, larger crowds gather in support of a common belief, escalating tensions. Eventually they retaliate in more extreme measures, threatening to overthrow the current society and escalating into deviations.
  • Going against the societal norm had resulted in their own goals being ignored and instead stigmatized their whole generation. Some societal norms are too accepted to be changed based off of belief of unfair gerontocracy. In this scenario they were correct, but forgot that they higher ups decided their work life rather than themselves.
