  • Greetings tourists! I am Julia and I will be your tour guide for today!
  • Follow me through this time machine and we will learn about the social classes of medieval Japan!
  • TIME MACHINESTAFF ONLY
  • Emperor
  • Here we see the emperor right outside of his palace.
  • Right over here, we see the shogun and daimyo.
  • Shogun and Daimyo
  • I am the Shogun.
  • And I am a daimyo!

  • Samurai Warriors
  • We are the samurai warriors of Japan!
  • Woah! Look! It's the feirce samurai warriors!
  • The highest social class was the emperor. Even though the emperor claimed to rule Japan, he still had no real power.
  • Peasants and Artisans
  • Over here are some peasants doing feild work.
  • Fish! Get your fresh fish right here!
  • The second highest consisted of shoguns and daimyo.Shoguns had the real power and ruled on the emperor's behalf. Daimyo paid no taxes to the government and even had their own personal armies, called samurai.
  • Merchants

  • Lastly, here are the merchants. Thank you so much for traveling through time with me!
  • The middle class consisted of samurais. Samurais were employed by daimyos and lived by an unwritten code of honor called bushido. Dying an honorable death was very important to them.
  • The second to lowest class consisted of peasants and artisans and made up the largest class.
  • The lowest class consisted of merchants. Unlike peasants and merchants, they produced no goods that contributed to society.
