- Okay class, today we will go over what we learned yesterday. You will find a partner and ask each other questions about what you learned. You all learned different things so don't just sit there. Remember class, those of you on my right hand side studied the Gold Rush. Those of you on my left you did Lewis and Clark.
- Well, this is going to be boring.
- Hey John, did you know that the gold rush started in Sutter Mill? Also, Did you know William Marshall started it? Another fact is that over 750,000 pounds of gold was found.
- That's a lot of gold Alex. Did you know that Lewis joined the army? Then, at the age of 27 he became the personal secretary of Thomas Jefferson.
- Wow that's amazing! Such a young age and he became Jefferson's personal secretary. Did you know that around 80,000 people immigrated to the U.S. during the Gold Rush?
- Whoa 80,000 people immigrated to the U.S. in such little time? Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe bought the Louisiana territory from the French $15,000,000.
- $15,000,000 really, that's a lot! Imagine how much money that would be today. Gold mining reached its peak in 1852 when some $81 million was pulled out of the ground.
- I know right, but $81 million in that short of time that's even more insane. Did you know that even before negotiations with France were finished, Jefferson asked Congress to finance an expedition to survey the lands of the Louisiana Territory and appointed Lewis as expedition commander.
