  • Suffragette Meeting in Session 
  • Emmeline was born on July 15, 1858 in Moss Side, Manchester, United Kingdom. Born into a family of politics and active abolitionists, she became a political figure that "shaped an idea of women for our time." Emmeline was the oldest of 10 siblings.
  • When Emmeline was only 14, she attended her first suffragette meeting with her mom. She loved it. Growing up Emmeline started reading at a young age of 3. Although she did, she never got an educational advantage like her brothers.
  • In 1879, Emmeline married Richard Pankhurst. Her and her husband created the Woman's Franchise League. Emmeline over a decade gave birth to 5 children. She later created the Woman's Social and Political Union. (WSPU)
  • Emmeline's legacy lives on through generations.
  • Emmeline's daughters joined the WSPU. Many members of that union broke many rules and got many prison sentences. They assaulted police officers and destroyed cop cars. They were often force fed and had hunger strikes.
  • Emmeline's husband sadly died in 1898 because of stomach ulcer. Because of his death, she went into debt. Years went by and she still participated in her union. She fought for woman's right to vote. Later in her life, Emmeline got many illnesses in her life. She managed to fight through them but sadly not all. Emmeline died on June 14, 1928.
  • Emmeline was a determined leader that helped woman get the right to vote. She had her ups and downs but she was an important person that changed history. As stated in ABC News "Emmeline Pankhurst wasn't perfect, but she was heroric."
