- Denial involves a person refusing to accept and experience a reality or event that would cause them stress or pain. Bethany refuses to accept her lung cancer diagnosis as true and continues to believe she is fine.
- Displacement
- I HATE YOU!
- Regression is when an individual copes with stress by moving into a previous psychosexual stage that they fixated on. Jack cannot bear the stress of being in severe debt, regressing to the oral stage and sucking his thumb.
- Repression
- Ana it's ok to open up.
- Sublimation is the relief of an impulse by the means of a method that is considered more acceptable than the impulse itself in other words something more constructive. Abby runs laps on the track in order to relieve the aggressive impulses created by school work.

- In contrast to sublimation, displacement has an individual relieve their impulses simply by having them give in to the impulse on a different target. Harrison has been fired from his high ranking job, and he decides to punch his brother to relieve the impulse of punching his boss.
- Repression is a mechanism utilized by a person's unconscious that works to block out any traumatic thoughts or memories from becoming conscious. Ana's mom tries to console her daughter on her past, severe fear of clowns, but Ana has repressed this memory and cannot recall.
