The East India Company was created in the 1600s to trade with India, which was rich in Spices, Jewels, Textiles and a large population and workforce. Indians were employed as Sepoys, soldiers for the company.
PARLIAMENT
Robert Clive joined the East India Company as a Clerk but realised if he became a Soldier and fought he would become richer quicker. In 1757 Robert Clive, with the East India Company Soldiers (Sepoys) won the Battle of Plassey. He overthrew the Nawab of Bengal and the company took control of most of India
In 1867 the Sepoys held a Mutiny. They had been told to bite off cartridges with Beef and Pork grease on them. This was against the Hindu and Muslim Religion so they refused and took control.
I think that the British did not help India very much. They took contol of the country and did not give the Indians any involvement in the rule. They did not let them vote and the top jobs were only given to British people. The indians were told to grow cotton and not food so when there was a shortage of food the indians could not feed themselves and there was a famine which resulted in lots of indians dying. The British also encouraged caste divisions which meant the communities were being split up.There was a lot of unrest as the British were getting rich and the indians were living in poverty.
Following the Munity and the East India Company's loss of control, the British Parliament took direct control of India.
The British built railways to transport goods around the country for trade, they told the indians to grow cash crops, and used indians to build their army.
