  • There was a pope named Boniface VIII. He was a brave pope who defended the Church in 1303 when politics wanted to intrude from him. He died from a heart attack after being slapped by the partisans of the King of France in Anagni.
  • 1378

  • The next pope, Clement V, forcefully transferred to France because of the disobedience of rich soldiers and the fight between middle-class families in Rome and Italy. These problems started the Exile of Avignon (1308-1378) that includes the most famous epidemic of all; the Black Plague which killed ⅓ of Europe’s population. The exile also worsened the parishes and dioceses since they were showing off their luxury to starving Europeans.
  • 1303-1378
  • Saint Catherine of Siena was the one who convinced the pope to go back to Rome. After being convinced, Pope Gregory XI went home gloriously in 1377 and fixed the country to its original state. Little do they know, there was another scandal coming.
  • In the following year, 1378, the cardinals elected Urban VI to be the pope after Gregory XI died in the same year. A few months have passed, he was accused of insanity and anomaly due to his tyrant actions. Because of this the cardinals elected an antipope, he is Clement VII, and he resided in Avignon.
  • Now that there were two popes; parishes, dioceses, and religious orders were split because of the election of an antipope. The Church found herself in a very messy situation.
