  • Orpheus the Great Musician.
  • The theme of Orpheus the Great Musician is trust is important when dealing with love.
  • "For all he could hear, he was utterly alone. Then he would wonder if the pitiless Hades would deceive him" (Coolidge 3).
  • The story Orpheus the Great Musician retold by Olivia Coolidge is about a man named Orpheus who is very musically talented. It starts out with him getting ready to marry the love of his life Eurydice who is unfortunately killed by a snake on the bridal day. Orpheus was so upset with the death of his bride and decided to go to the underworld to get her back and he played his lyre all the way down. He was given the chance to get her back from Hades because of his lovely music the catch was he had to go all the way back up without looking back. He does not make it all the way back up before he looks back he sees her but she fades away forever. He is so sad that he plays sad music for a long time and is killed.
  • The lyre is a symbol of Orpheus 's talent . The lyre is what formed him into a great musician . It also is a symbol of love because he used it in the processes of trying to regain his love.
  • The Tree and Animals are a good example because they love his music so much that they surround him to listen to it.
  • His love for her was his inspiration, and his power sprang from the passionate longing that he knew in his own heat(Coolidge 2). I picked this because it show how much he loves her and all of his feelings he has for her along with how is life is hers.
  • "At the final moment he could bear it no more" (Coolidge 4). This is at the part where he is climbing out of Hades. He can not bear the thought of leaving her behind. In the end he goes against what Hades said and he turned around only to lose her.
  • The unfortunate lover hasted back down again down the steep dark path. But all was in vane (Coolidge 4). I picked this because he would not have the urge to go back down if he had just had trust in what Hades told him in the end he lost his love because of not trusting him and he was killed.
