The colonies were allowed to govern themselves, then Britain began to use direct influence. Britain also started to enforce taxes and trade law to pay off the debt that they have from the 7 year war that England had.
"No Taxation Without Representation"
Since Britain was taxing the colonists they were able to maintain British troops in all the colonies. The colonists did not think the taxing was fair because they had no representation in parliament. Britain thought it was fair because they fought the Indians.
Colonial Debate
When the stamp act was passed in 1765 it was the first direct tax in the colonies. The colonists had to prove that they paid taxes if they wanted to buy something. and have legal proof on things that they owned.
Boycott
The colonies are not buying goods from us
Americans started a protest, they sent a letter to Britain about want representation in parliament. They insisted on the statement " No taxation with out representation.
The congress failed at first do to the four out of the fourteen colonies did no show up. Delegates from every colony (besides the four that did not come) had a debate and found stuff they had in common.
The colonist stop buying British goods (They boycotted). Eventually Britain stopped the act do to pressure from the colonists.
