  • The Sugar Act was significant because it was the first tax that the British enforced after the French and Indian War. They were adamant on raising and reinforcing the tax and it led to the rebellion and anger of the colonists who then protested for rights.
  • 1774 First Continental Congress
  • Hear Hear!
  • We must draft a petition to Britain and show them that we deserve a say in Parliament!
  • This was significant because it brought the colonists together and helped them realized unity is key. It was a tool of propaganda that turned more of the public's opinion to pro freedom.
  • 1765 Stamp Act
  • Townshend act Parliament enacted new duties to be collected on colonial imports of tea, glass, and paper. The revenue would be used to pay crown officials in the colonies, thus making the officials independent of the colonial assemblies that had paid their salaries. The Townshend Acts also provided for the search of private homes for smuggled goods. All that an official needed to conduct such a search would be a writ of assistance

  • Common Sense, by Thomas Paine, shifted the public opinion on the revolutions so that there were more pro freedom than pro loyalty in the colonists. Though there were still a few loyalists in America, Thomas Paine took a big step towards freedom and got more support towards independence.
