- On April 19, 1775 Lexington and Concord fought. There were 700 British red coats, or regulars, and they were led by Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith. Captain John Parker was leading the militiamen in Lexington. This battle took place in Lexington, Concord, and Middlesex county. This battle is considered a military victory, and the Americans won the battle. this was the famous 'shot heard 'round the world' and it marked the start of the American War of Independence
