  • Good morning class! Welcome to another outdoor lesson!
  • I know about his sociocultural perspective, where he believed in intersubjectivity, and that cognitive development depends on experience and culture; and that children are products of their culture.
  • Last class, we learned who Vygotsky was. Now this class we will talk about his theories of Cognitive Development. Does anyone know anything about it?
  • I know about the Zone of Proximal Development which is basically the differences between what one can do alone or with assistance.
  • That's correct! Very good guys!!
  • In addition to the things that were named, Vygotsky had the idea that cognitive growth results from a child's involvement in structured activities with others who are more experienced. This is called Guided Participation.
  • Scaffolding: match assistance tolearner’s needs. Private Speech: comments intendto regulate own behavior. Inner Speech: thoughts
  •
  •
  • Here on this board are some other terms that you should write down. Scafflding, private speech, and inner speech.
  •
  •
  • 3 Mental Hardware components: Sensory Memory, Working Memory and Long-Term Memory.
  •
  •
  • In addition to his Social Cultural theory, he also had one called the Information processing theory. This was basically his idea that humans and computers are both symbol processors. The board shows the 3 components of mental hardware.
  •
  •
  • Lastly, we have his Core Knowledge Theory. His is where he had ideas that we acquire distinctive domains of knowledge early, and that humans have a rapid acquisition of language and knowledge of objects, people and living things.
  • Through Vygotsky's theories came reciprocal teaching. In this method, teachers and students collaborate in learning and practicing four key skills: summarizing, questioning, clarifying, and predicting.
  •
  •
  • We have to go inside soon but I want you all to write down Vygotsky's impact on teaching and schools since Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development?.
