  • Ouch, that sounded like a milk bottle with a hammer!
  • I could swear I was thinking about something....
  • We ballerinas are all the same...We are of equal talent...And that is good.
  • Boy, that was a doozy!
  • Handicaps are good...It keeps us all equal
  • Thank you, amendments 211, 212, and 213!
  • I'm the emperor, and you are my bride!
  • Vonnegut uses this story to point out and ridicule the deterioration of society that comes as a result of people and government going too far on ridiculous ideas. The fact that there is over 200 amendments in this story means that the country has changed beyond recognition, and the obsession with everyone being equal has completely taken over, as the exceptional are weighted down by handicaps, and the average are reigned in by handicaps as well. People can barely think for themselves or perform their own actions, and yet they have fooled themselves to be happy about it. This shows how leadership uses a baseline good idea, like equality, but completely abuses it for power and control while manipulating the masses so that they believe it is for their own benefit, ensuring that they remain in power. In a way, this country is the ultimate fascist world, which great democracies often crumble into, which is what I think Vonnegut is trying to show.
