  • In 1765, due to the 130 million pounds debt from the French and Indian war, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, which required colonists in America to pay a tax on all printed materials, including legal documents, newspapers, and even playing cards.
  • Stamp Act Congress
  • This tax was seen as an attack and disrespected on the colonists' rights and triggered widespread protests and boycotts throughout the colonies.
  • Stamps Act
  • For Lower-class Americans, they protested the Stamp Act by burning British Customs Officials' homes. This forced the British Government to react.
  • Also, a group of colonial leaders formed the Stamp Act Congress, and drafted a petition to the British Government demanding the repeal of the tax.
  • The British government eventually repealed the Stamp Act in 1766, but tensions between the colonists and British authorities continued to escalate.
  • The Stamp Act and the colonists' resistance to it set the stage for further conflicts between the colonies and Britain, and would finally lead to the American Revolution.
