- Wind blowing, shed walls creaking,and the rustling of cotton. Kwame and the others appeared to be asleep. until a soft melody was sung far back of the plantation.

- Kwame gathered his things and said goodbye to his good friend Paul, who he'd grown up on the field with.Paul couldn't leave due to his wife being pregnant, but they hoped to meet each other in the future although it wasn't likely.
- How many slaves have you freed? I wants to be able to start my life!
- Ive done freed ‘bout 300 slaves,with god there's away. I believe so should yall, now let's get a move on before the sun rises!

- They were stopped at Mendenhall Plantation. That was the first resting stop where they were each given bread and water as they prepared for the journey ahead of them.
- The next morning Kwame went to speak to the conductor Harriet Tubman and asked, "How many slaves have you freed? I wants to be able to start my life!" Harriet then says,"Ive done freed ‘bout 300 slaves,with god there's away. I believe so should yall, now let's get a move on before the sun rises!" Kwame with a glimpse of hope in his eyes began gathering his things.
