The Most Dangerous Game

By Richard Connell

Arrival on Ship-Trap Island

The Vampire in his Castle

The Hunting Controversy

On their way to hunt jaguar in the Amazon, Whitney and Rainsford discuss hunting animals. The foil characters disagree on the animals' feelings as Whitney believes they feel fear and Rainsford thinks animals' feelings are nonexistent. During their discussion, they pass the mysterious island, which Whitney thinks has evil superstitions and Rainsford dismisses as nonsense.

After hearing gunshots, Rainsford leans too far on the ship's rail and falls overboard. He struggles against the rough, blood-warm waters of the sea before reaching the jagged rocky shore of Ship Trap Island where he collapses from exhaustion. When he awakes, he sees a spot in the jungle grass where a large animal struggled and was killed with a small caliber gun.

I hunt people because I am superior!

I wonder how they taste...

Animals can't feel pain or fear, silly!

If he only knew...

Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder!

I can possibly do 100 more strokes...

What an enchanting castle in the middle of nowhere...wonder who resides in this magnificent structure.
