  • Hi there, My name is Enya and I will be showing you around Thomas's house to help identify and manage potential risks
  •
  • Thomas is at risk of falling and injuring himself when he is required to get out of his wheel chair. So when he Goes to the toilet, has a shower or gets into bed he is at risk.
  • Also installing ramps over small steps and door sills around the house will allow Thomas to move more freely
  • Chair for shower
  •
  • To manage this risk i would recommend Thomas installs rails to help support himself on and off the toilet, use a chair in the shower and adjust the height to suit him making it easier for him to transfer on and off
  • Rails
  • There is no room for me to perform my treatment freely and there are objects on the floor that should cause tripping hazards
  • In a home environment there are risks of either the therapist, Hugo or Thomas tripping over and injuring themselves while helping Thomas which could causing injury
  • Obstructing free movement
  • Hazard of pot smashing
  • Tripping hazard
  • To manage those risks the table, pot and books can be cleared so that Thomas in his wheelchair and the therapist while doing treatment can move freely
  • now i can move freely around the living room and won't run into anything
  •
  • When i do exercises that are too aggressive and require me to do many repetitions my MS flares up and gets worse
  •
  • It is very important with his condition that the exercises are light and only require few repetitions so it doesn't fatigue his muscles He also can't balance on his own so seated exercises are appropriate
  • I can get our of my wheel chair and balance on my own!
  • Thomas forgets that he is unable to get out of his wheelchair which puts him at risk of injuring himself and falling if he attempts to get out
  • To manage this risk Thomas needs to be reminded to not get out of his wheelchair alone, a good way of doing this would be putting posters around the house especially in places he may try to get out of his wheelchair like the bedroom
  • Stay in wheelchair
  • Wait for Hugo before getting out of your wheelchair
  • I hope this doesn't hurt my back
  • You can see that Hugo (Thomas's husband) acts as his career and assits him out of his chair and to move around which puts Hugo at risk of patient handling injuries such as musculoskeletal disorders
  • To manage manual handling injury the couple could use assistive devices such as a walking frame to help Thomas. Hugo could also undergo training to make sure he is using the correct technique.
  • I just want to be back in my gym where i can do what i love!
  • To avoid the risk of Thomas trying to workout in his gym due to his emotional frustration and potentially injuring himself I will advise for him to complete his exercises in his wheelchair but in his gym so he feels like it is still being used
