  • There be no slaves over here, it is prohibited over here!
  • The Compromise of 1850 consisted of several things, one being the Fugitive Slave Act. This act allowed officials to arrest any person accused of being a runaway slave, denied fugitives the right to a trial, and required all citizens to help capture runaway slaves. This then led to a lot of people expressing their opinions on this specific act and compromise.
  • Dred Scott Decision
  • North Vs. South
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel about the harsh conditions experienced by enslaved African American Americans, was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her novel was published in 1852 and it widened the chasm between the North and South, greatly strengthened Northern abolitionism, and weakened British sympathy for the Southern cause.
  • Harper's Ferry
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 basically allowed slavery on anti-slavery land that was protected under the MO Compromise. This then caused the balance of power to shift in the government and across the land.
  • Election of 1860
  • The Dred Scott Decision angered abolitionists who saw the Supreme Court's ruling as a way to stop debate about slavery in the territories. The tension and beef between the North and South grew dramatically and resulted in the secession of southern states from the Union. The Confederate States of America was then later formed.
  • On October 16th 1859, John Brown led a group of 21 men in order to seize the federal arsenal and distribute the weapons to slaves. His main priority and goal was to create a slave uprising, invade the South, and end slavery. Brown's plan resulted in utter failure and he was hanged. His raid helped make any further accommodation between the North and South nearly impossible which then became an important impetus of the Civil War.
  • When the election of 1860 took place, the win of Abraham Lincoln caused a chain reaction of southern states to secede from the Union since they were afraid of Lincolns policies. They're whole economy depended on slavery and one of Lincoln's main priorities was to abolish slavery when he became president. This then set the stage for the American Civil War.
