  • Before The War
  • Athens
  • Ionia
  • Ionians are revolting against the Persians! We must send help!
  • We have now conquered you!
  • Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • The Start Of The War (Which Is The Battles Of Marathon)
  • Athens
  • Marathon
  • Persia
  • Pheidippides
  • Pheidippides' 26.2 Mile Run To Athens
  • I have to go warn those in Athens
  • In 546 BC, Persia conquers the entire sea. The Persians started wars in Ionia on the coast of Anatolia. Soon, Ionia is conquered by Persia. They (Ionians) revolt against Persia and Athens sends aid to help the Ionians fight back.
  • Greek City-States Unite To Help Defend Athens
  • The Persian King, Darius the Great, defeats the revolt and vows to destroy Athens in revenge. In 490, Darius sent a Persian fleet of 25,000 to attack Athens. The fleet landed in Marathon to only find out that 10,000 Athenians were waiting for them.
  • The Delian League Forms
  • Let's form a league to stop Persia if they ever attack again.
  • Yeah!
  • The Persians wore light armor and really lacked combat training and lost 6,000 men while Athens lost 200. Athens wins the battle but leaves the city defenseless. They send a boy named Phelidippides to go and warn the people in Athens that the Persians were going to attack the city. Pheidippides ran 26.2 miles and fell dead after giving the warning.
  • The After-Math and the Cause of the Peloponnesian War
  • Athens is using its power for them, not anyone in the League.
  • Once the Persians sailed into the harbor in Athens, they found the city defended. During that time, the Greek city states were really badly divided. Some of them went to go help the Athenians but others didn't. The Persians went through a mountain passage where 7,000 Greeks (including 300 Spartans) stopped them for 3 days.
  • The battle moved to the sea. The Persians lose 1/3 of their fleet and in 479 BC, the Persians lose the Battle of Plateau. The Greek city-states alliances form a league to help drive out Persia if they were to ever attack again. Persia attacked again and the league drove them out.
  • All the city-state were confident and felt free. In the 490's BC, Athens takes the head of the Delian League. 200 city-states were in the League. Athens used its power to control all the other members in the League. Soon the 200 city states became more than provinces to Athens. Sparta was mad and didn't like that Athens was in control and ruining the League.
