  • The NACA was founded in 1915 and was on a mission to change the face of U.S aviation. The NACA was the foundation for NASA. Even though the NACA's budget was much more smaller than NASA's is now, but the more funding they got the more they developed and tested new advanced airplane concepts and fixed problems the aviators had.
  • 1915NACA FOUNDED
  • Sputnik 1 was launched in October 4th, 1957 by the Soviet Union which was a huge blow to the U.S in the Space Race. It was the first satellite sent into orbit. Sputnik, which was Russian for fellow traveler, was about a size of volleyball and had 4 antennas that transmitted beeps that could be had on radios.
  • 1957SPUTNIK 1 WAS LAUNCHED
  • The Vanguard rocket was the first attempt from the U.S to launch a satellite into orbit. The Vanguard was 22 meters tall and had 3 stages, first stage would bring the rocket to an altitude of 58 kilometers, the second to 480 kilometers, and the final stage would bring the satellite into orbit. The rocket would carry a 1.5 kilogram satellite and was smaller than Sputnik 1. But it only reached 4 feet and 1.2 meters before it fell and exploded. The U.S was mocked for the failure.

  • 1958JUNO 1 LAUNCHED
  • Juno 1 was launched on January 31, 1958. Juno 1 was a rocket the U.S made after the Vanguard rocket. Juno 1 was a descendant of Germanys V-2 rocket they used in WW2, which was the first long-range guided ballistic missile. The leader in development,, Wernher von Braun wanted it to land on the rocket on the moon but it landed on the wrong planet. After Germany lost the war Von Braun and his team were taken to the U.S to work on  operation paperclip, and under the direction of Von Braun the Juno 1 was developed. Juno 1 was 21 meters tall and had 4 stages and could only carry about 22 kilograms. It was successful and the first American satellite sent into space.
