- Archduke Franz Ferdinand was born in the city of Graz on December 18, 1863 and became the Archduke of Austria-Hungary.
- In 1900, Franz Ferdinand married Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg. Their parents didn't agree with it but Franz loved Sophie and would give up everything for her. They also had 3 kids.
- In the south part of Austria-Hungary there was a region called Bosnia. Many of the Bosnians wanted to have their own country instead of being ruled by Austria-Hungary. The country of Serbia, just south of the Austria-Hungary border also wanted the freedom of the Bosnians.
- When Franz announced his trip to Sarajevo, Bosnian nationalists (people who wanted Bosnia to be its own country) saw their opportunity to strike at the Austrian Empire. With help from Serbia, assassins(a terrorist group called the Black Hand) were recruited and trained to kill the Archduke as he travelled through the streets of Sarajevo.

- On June 28, 1914 Franz Ferdinand and his wife were in travelling through Sarajevo to the Town Hall. There were Black Hand had several assassins positioned along the route. After a few attempts, an assassin named Gavrilo Princip had fired his gun twice, shooting Franz and his wife.
- The Austria-Hungary government saw the assassination as a direct attack on the country and believed that the Serbians had helped the Bosnian terrorists attack so they declared war on Serbia. A few days later, Germany declared war on Russia to help its ally, Austria-Hungary. Which then began World War 1
